Double-Wide Carports

Double carports (or double-wide carports) are metal shelters built to cover two vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.). As a rule, most manufacturers refer to their standard 18′- to 24′-wide units as double carports or 2-car carports. Double carport width starts at 18′, but we always recommend going with a width of at least 20′ to allow for enough space to be able to move around each vehicle. An 18′-wide unit may adequately cover two smaller cars, but it doesn’t leave you much wiggle room.  We’d encourage you to choose a wider building for this reason; doing so will also allow you the space to be able to accommodate larger vehicles in the future.

What Is a Two-Car Carport and Why You Should Consider Getting One

A double car carport is a metal building that is designed specifically to cover two vehicles. These vehicles can include:

  • Cars
  • Trucks
  • Boats
  • RVs
  • Motorcycles
  • Farming equipment such as tractors

There are also plenty of advantages to regular carports that double-wide carports only offer more of. These advantages include:

Protection

A carport offers protection against the elements, such as rain, snow, hail, and even sun. When you go out in the sun, it is best to protect your skin against sunscreen. The same is true for cars, whichcan be damaged by the sun’s harmful UV rays. Your car is an expensive investment, so you want to protect it from the sun, which can damage the car’s exterior paint as well as its interior.

It can also offer protection against potential thieves and vandals who may be deterred by your vehicle being parked beneath a carport. Your vehicle will also be visible to you from your home, so you will be able to spot and chase off any would-be criminals. This is different from a garage, where you would not be able to see your car if a thief or vandal managed to break in.

With a two-car carport, you will be able to keep two vehicles safe rather than just one.

Storage

Do you have extra junk just lying around? A lawn mower or weed whacker you are not sure what to do with? A carport is a great place to keep possessions you have no other place to put. You can also save money by keeping these possessions beneath your carport rather than in a storage unit that you rent monthly. A two-car carport means twice the space for storage!

Energy Efficiency

A carport is also more energy efficient than a garage. Garages have lights and garage openers which use energy that carports do not have. So if you do not want to add to your electricity bill, or you are simply energy-conscious, a carport is probably the better option for you.

Roof Options for Your Two-Car Carport

There are several roof options available for your two-car carport. You should keep the roof’s functionality and your budget in mind when choosing the one that is best for you. A few options and their functionality include:

  • Regular (rounded) roof: This is the most economical style available. These roofs will protect your vehicle the same as the others without breaking the bank! The curved style also speeds up the assembly process, so you save time and money!
  • Boxed-eave style with horizontal sheeting: This is an A-frame style roof. Itcosts more than the regular roof but ischeaper than vertical-style roofs. This style is better for areas with little to no precipitation and winds that are not very strong.
  • Vertical style: This is another A-frame style roof that is the strongest of the three roofs. This is a premium-style roof, which is why it’s the most expensive of the three. This would be the best option if you live in an area with a lot of rain and snow or high winds.

What You Need to Know About Double-Wide Carport Sizes

A two-car carport can be anywhere from 18feet to 24feet wide. With a width of 18feet, you will have enough room to park two small vehicles, but it will not leave room for much else.

If you are looking to buy a carport so both of your vehicles are covered, we encourage you to consider a carport that is at least 20feet wide so you have enough space to move around each vehicle and not worry about denting simply by opening a door. You may also consider buying a 20feet-wide carport or larger if you have larger vehicles or plan to buy larger ones in the future.

When it comes to length, most double-wide carports have a standard length of 21feet. However, you should consider the lengthof your vehicle or whether you plan to enclose it in the future and turn it into a garage.

Here are a few double-wide carport sizes and what they work best for:

  • 20’x21’: This dimension will cover two small cars. This is also as narrow as you can go if you have plans to turn your carport into a garage someday.
  • 22’x21’: This size is not much bigger than the one above, but it will provide more wiggle room to move around your two small cars.
  • 24’x21’: This size is also great for providing plenty of wiggle room if you have two small cars. It is also a good size if you have two large vehicles or if you want storage space.

If you want more storage space or just more room, you can increase your carport’s length by 5-foot increments until you get the right size for your needs.

  • 30’x40’x9’: This option starts at $14000, and the price varies by state and location. This option can comfortably fit two larger vehicles while still allowing plenty of space for walking and storage!

Double Carport Plans

The style of double carport you should choose depends on the functionality and options you desire, as well as your budget.  The regular (rounded) roof style is the most economical. There are also two A-frame style roof options: the boxed eave style with horizontal metal sheeting, and the vertical style with vertical metal sheeting. The vertical style roof is the premium option because it is stronger than other roof styles, and the vertical orientation of the sheeting prevents accumulation of snow or pooling of rainwater. You can opt to leave the ends and sides of your double carport open, enclose any walls you choose or go for the full enclosure to create a secure double garage.

Double Carport Prices

How much will a double carport cost?  The answer to that question depends on which dimensions you choose for length, width, and height, as well as which roof style you go with.  You can leave the carport open, or you can choose to partially or fully enclose the walls.  There are also other customization options to consider. Will you go with the standard 14-GA tubing, or will you opt for the thicker, stronger 12-GA frame?  Do you want to add garage doors, walk-in doors, or windows? Below is a pricing table that illustrates some of your options:

Another good option to consider is the ability to add some utility building space to your double carport.  You can enclose just the back area of the double carport, creating a shed for secure storage.  These utility carport/combo buildings are a very popular option as they are both cost-effective and versatile.  Take a moment and explore this option on the Carport Central metal utility carports page!

Double Carports for Sale

Note that we can certify your double carport to minimum local snow/wind speed ratings; depending on your state and local regulations, having a certified structure may be required in your area.  Certified structures also come with blueprints, should that be a requirement for your local building permit process.
